Donation to Sylmar’s Wildlife Learning Center

Several years ago Mike and I visited the Wildlife Learning Center in Sylmar, California. It is a zoological park nestled in an old olive grove. Wildlife Learning Center provides life-long care in a shady natural environment to more than 100 displaced, rescued and zoo-born wild animals. It is a wonderfully maintained facility and the animals are well cared for and appear very contented.

Mike and I met with the co-founders, Paul Hahn and David Riherd. They graciously allowed us to took some pictures and feature our photo of their bald eagle, Dakota, in one of our early books. We have visited the center several times since, each time we’ve noticed their continued expansion.

One of their long-time big supporters is legendary actor and animal rights activist, Betty White. Another is actor Pauley Perrette, who currently plays Abby Sciuto on the NCIS TV show (one of my husband’s and my favorite shows).

We have also looked for some way to help support their efforts. A couple of years ago we were able to facilitate several microscope donations to the center for both their outreach educational programs and internal veterinary care facility. Although it was only one small way, it felt rewarding to be involved.

As non-profits go, Wildlife Learning Center could always use an infusion of funds. They have educational programs throughout the year and once a year they have their major fundraising event which often includes their prominent supporters in attendance. They also have a silent auction. This year I contributed Crystal Art Outfitter’s Fall Leaves Crystal Scarf and a $50 gift certificate to the center’s Safari NightAwards Dinner. I desperately wanted to attend this year but we already had a prior engagement. Hopefully we will be able to attend next year. It is already on our calendar.

I highly recommend you visit the Wildlife Learning Center. It is well worth the time. The staff is always very interested in answering any of your questions. If you go or have already been, please let me know. I would love to hear about your experience.
